AHA Releases Updated COVID-19 Essential Surgery Roadmap

During April, when Pennsylvania hospitals were looking forward to the resumption of scheduled surgeries and procedures, the American Hospital Association (AHA) and a group of national health care and provider organizations, issued a joint statement that outlined a roadmap for resuming elective surgeries. Yesterday, the AHA and partnering organizations released an updated version of their roadmap.

CMS Presents Changes to Reduce Burden and Improve Patient Outcomes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled the creation of the Office of Burden Reduction and Health Informatics in an effort to reduce regulatory and administrative burden. The new office is an outgrowth of the agency’s Patients over Paperwork Initiative which was implemented to eliminate unnecessary, duplicative, and costly requirements and regulations.

Patient Safety Authority Annual Report Highlights Progress in Patient Safety

Pennsylvania’s Patient Safety Authority (PSA) has released its 2019 Annual Report. The report highlights activities of the PSA, including its September 2019-launched quarterly peer-reviewed journal, Patient Safety. It also includes an analysis of patient safety events reported into the Pennsylvania patient safety reporting system (PA-PSRS), a secure database that collects health care facility data on “serious events” and “incidents.”

February 14 is National Donor Day; PA Hospitals Encourage Organ Donation

February 14 has been designated as National Donor Day—a day to increase awareness about organ donation and the lives that can be saved. Ninety-five percent of U.S. adults support organ donation, but only 58 percent are registered organ donors. Pennsylvania hospitals are working to change that through participation National Donor Day and the 2020 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge.

First Evidence-Based Guidelines for Pediatric Patients with Sepsis Issued

The international Surviving Sepsis Campaign has issued the first evidence-based guidelines targeted for pediatric sepsis. Sepsis affects more than 75,000 children per year in the United States and results in significant morbidity and mortality. Recognizing which children require sepsis treatment remains a key challenge.
