Staying Vigilant Against Cyberthreats

June 24, 2025

The federal government has highlighted two potential cybersecurity threats that should be on your radar this week.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Iran-related Cybersecurity Threat

The Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin warning organizations to take cybersecurity precautions following the ongoing Iran conflict.

The bulletin noted the conflict could motivate violent extremists and hate crime perpetrators to pursue both physical threats and cyberattacks.

“Both hacktivists and Iranian government-affiliated actors routinely target poorly secured US networks and Internet-connected devices for disruptive cyberattacks,” the bulletin notes.

See the bulletin for additional resources and information.

2. Medicare Fraud Scheme Involving Phishing Fax Requests

CMS officials have identified a fraud scheme targeting Medicare providers and suppliers. Scammers are impersonating CMS and sending phishing fax requests for medical records and documentation, falsely claiming to be part of a Medicare audit, officials said.

CMS emphasized that it doesn’t initiate audits by requesting medical records via fax. If you believe you’re receiving fraudulent or questionable request, contact your Medical Review Contractor to confirm if it’s real.
