HAP Board Endorses Consensus Position on Hospital and Health System COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

July 02, 2021

Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems have been at the center of supporting the public health mission to achieve herd immunity through widespread vaccination. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and highly effective at preventing COVID-19 disease. Hospitals have witnessed first-hand that vaccinated patients are less likely to fall severely ill and require hospitalization. Vaccination of the health care workforce is crucially important to protect patients and staff.

Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems have made remarkable progress over the past eight months in vaccinating both their own workforce, as well as being the primary providers of over 12 million vaccinations to further protect the communities they serve. Significant work is underway to identify and address remaining gaps.

With the benefit of hearing perspectives and circumstances across the commonwealth, the HAP Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the following consensus statement:

To protect the lives and welfare of its members’ patients and employees, HAP supports adoption of proven infection control practices, including mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for its members’ workforces, with appropriate exemptions.

HAP will continue to keep members informed about updates to infection control and prevention guidance, regulatory review of current COVID-19 vaccinations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, policy developments at the state and federal level, and relevant legal and operational considerations impacting vaccination policies.

Additionally, HAP continues to amplify key public information messages urging all Pennsylvanians to get vaccinated, and reinforcing the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.
