HAP Achievement Awards: Main Line Health

July 18, 2025

HAP's annual Achievement Awards honor hospitals and health systems for their innovation, creativity, and commitment to patient care. The Achievement Awards showcase and share member hospitals’ and health systems’ successful programs and best practices.

Main Line Health received the Excellence in Care Award for improving outcomes and equity through a family-centered approach to opioid-exposed newborn care.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The challenge:  Prolonged hospitalization, frequent pharmacologic treatment, and family separation disrupted bonding and increased stress for opioid-exposed newborns.
  • Addressing the Issue:  A closer examination revealed inconsistent screening, racial disparities in testing, poor team coordination, and outdated assessment methods as key contributors.
  • Taking Action:  A systemwide shift to the Eat Sleep Console (ESC) model, combined with EMR-based screening, prenatal consultations, family-centered education, and staff training on bias and reporting, transformed care for opioid-exposed newborns.
  • Results:  Efforts achieved 100 percent maternal screening, eliminated racial disparities in drug testing, reduced newborn length of stay and morphine use, increased prenatal consultations, and kept readmission rates low.
  • Advancing Care:  The team highlighted the program’s commitment to equitable care, noting, “If the family is unable, or unwilling, to provide the non-pharmacologic care central to the ESC approach, the baby is not excluded from the program. Instead, the hospital provides volunteer cuddlers or other staff members to provide the holding, cuddling, and rocking central to the program.”
