Four Enduring Lessons from 2020

Twenty-twenty was an incredibly difficult year for everyone. Just weeks into the year—on January 27—the HAP emergency management (EM) team activated for the COVID-19 event. As we approach the anniversary of our activation, and look back on the year that was, we see the ways that COVID-19 changed how we do things, as well as some essential lessons that will guide us as we plan for future emergencies.

Summary of COVID-19 Treatments

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a large number of Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA). The FDA uses its EUA authority to strengthen the response during public health emergencies. EUAs have ranged from in vitro diagnostic products, personal protective equipment and related devices, ventilators and other medical devices, and drug and biological products. The two newest EUAs include the COVID-19 vaccines by Moderna (December 18, 2020) and Pfizer-BioNTech (December 23, 2020).

PA Confirms First Case of COVID-19 Variant

Pennsylvania has confirmed its first case of the COVID-19 variant in Dauphin County, state health officials announced today. The individual had mild symptoms and has recovered after completing the required isolation period at home.

Pennsylvania Hospitals Ask Pennsylvanians: Help Us Stop the Spread of COVID-19

This week, HAP released the second in a series of public service announcements to strongly urge Pennsylvanians to do their part to stop the spread of COVID-19. Featuring frontline clinicians, many from hospital COVID-19 units, throughout the commonwealth, Pennsylvanians were urged to continue to wear a mask, avoid large gatherings, wash their hands often, and stay home when sick.

The effort to vaccinate Pennsylvania’s health care workforce is kicking into high gear in the first week of 2021 as state health officials urged Pennsylvanians across the commonwealth to remain vigilant in the fight against COVID-19.
