More Measles Cases in Pa.

Public health leaders continue to monitor the spread of measles, with 30 confirmed cases reported yesterday.

Here’s what you need to know:

• By the numbers:  Pennsylvania has reported 624 cases, including 91 in the past week. About 17 percent of the confirmed cases were hospitalized and 32 percent were under 18.
  • The state has reported two measles-associated deaths.
  • Centre, Chester, Clearfield, Indiana, Jefferson, Lancaster, Mifflin, Snyder, and York counties have community transmission.
• Concerning trend:  Measles cases have been on the upswing in Pennsylvania and across the nation, leaving the country on the brink of losing its “elimination status.”
  • The virus is considered eliminated when there have not been any large outbreaks or continuous transmission over a 12-month period.
• Nationwide:  More than 3,100 cases have been reported nationwide, which is ahead of last year’s total of 2,289.
  • About 94 percent of cases involve people who are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccinated status.
  • About 8 percent of the reported cases have required hospitalization.
• What’s next:  The vaccine is 97 percent effective at preventing measles after two doses. State public health leaders continue to promote vaccinations, with dozens of additional vaccine clinics scheduled based on community interest and need, officials said.
