PA Insurance Marketplace Closes Enrollment for January 1, but Coverage Still Available for February 1

December 22, 2020

The deadline to enroll for health insurance that starts during the New Year closed today on Pennsylvania’s new health insurance marketplace, but residents still have time to enroll in plans that begin February 1, 2021.

Earlier this month, Governor Tom Wolf issued a proclamation urging residents to get covered for 2021, using the state’s new marketplace, Pennie. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the need for everyone to have access to quality health insurance. Nearly 300,000 Pennsylvanians have enrolled through Pennie, state officials said earlier this month. Nationally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced more than 8.2 million people selected marketplace plans for health insurance in 2021.

“I encourage all citizens to support efforts to increase access to affordable, meaningful health care coverage for all people throughout Pennsylvania,” Governor Wolf said in a statement.

Residents have until January 15 to select health insurance coverage effective February 1, 2021.

During November, open enrollment began on Pennsylvania’s new health insurance individual marketplace. The new statewide marketplace replaces HealthCare.gov as the go-to resource for Pennsylvanians who need to purchase their own insurance. The state transitioned away from the federal insurance portal in an effort to increase access and affordability through the state’s reinsurance program.

This state marketplace has several key resources to aid consumers, including a plan comparison tool, and customer service available over the phone and online. Some residents with qualifying events will be able to sign up or make changes to their coverage outside of the enrollment window.
