COVID-19 has changed the landscape for infectious disease planning, mitigation, and response. 

It’s been more than a year since the pandemic hit Pennsylvania. The current numbers indicate that the light at the end of the tunnel is growing each day, but the fight against COVID-19 continues in the commonwealth with hospitals and health care workers at the epicenter.

The myriad news stories about marking a year of COVID-19 have caused many of us to stop and think about where were went, how we got here, and how far we’ve come. 

As we approach the anniversary of our COVID-19 activation, we see the ways that COVID-19 changed how we do things, as well as some essential lessons that will guide us as we plan for future emergencies.

HAP has been monitoring national trends in supply shortages and has compiled a few suggestions as members continue to address increased patient loads and the requisite demand for needed supplies.

Months of planning for the COVID-19 vaccine has been condensed to weeks and days, as hospitals have had to focus on strict guidelines for the storage, allocation, and distribution of the vaccine, in order to maximize every available dose. 

As we head into the last quarter of 2020, health care systems and workforce throughout Pennsylvania continue to show amazing resilience. 

I’ve worked with some great leaders during my tenure, and many of the best ones have adopted a transformational style of leadership. Their examples are the ones that I have used most often as I strive to be an effective leader in my own work in the emergency management community.
