Location: Online

Registration Deadline: October 22, 2020

Overview

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a style of communicating with people who are in the midst of change, transition, or a period of personal growth. MI practice relies on 40 years of evidence to ignite a patient’s intrinsic motivations to change behavior, such as drug use and treatment adherence.

Objectives

  • Define motivational interviewing
  • Recognize patient ambivalence as expressed by change talk and sustain talk
  • Identify the ways in which MI skills can support patients with OUD
  • List microskills associated with motivational interviewing (open ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries)
