HAP Statement on Governor Wolf’s State Budget Address

February 03, 2021

Andy Carter, president and CEO of The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), released the following statement in response to Governor Wolf’s fiscal year 2021–2022 state budget address:

“As we inch closer to a full year with COVID-19 in Pennsylvania, we face a grim reminder of all that we have lost. More than 850,000 individuals have contracted COVID-19 and nearly 22,000 Pennsylvanians have lost their battle with this illness. Every one of us has been touched by this virus or made some sacrifice to protect others.

“For the more than 291,000 people who work in Pennsylvania hospitals, this past year has presented unbelievable challenges. Just ask the nurses who have held patients’ hands while they’ve said goodbye to loved ones over a video call. Or the physicians who sleep in a different part of the house after their shifts, so they can protect their families. Or the physician assistants running local vaccine clinics. Or the environmental services and dietary workers, serving critical frontline roles in order to keep their hospitals running.

“As lawmakers outline their priorities for the upcoming budget, it is easy to forget that Pennsylvania’s hospital community still is on the front lines of this health pandemic. As we all adjust to a new normal, hospitals continue to do extraordinary work to provide everyday care, vaccinate their communities, and fight the threat that COVID-19 continues to pose. This budget must be a path to recovery, a way forward. We may not know what this new normal looks like just yet, but it must include resources to ensure that our hospitals—and the incredible individuals who care for Pennsylvania’s patients—remain financially stable and receive the resources to do what is being asked of them.”
