U.S. Investigates More Cyclosporiasis Cases

The U.S. has recorded over 4,100 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases, and another 7,400 cases are under investigation.

The case count makes this the worst year on record for infections, passing the previous high set in 2019.

Here’s what you need to know:

• The latest:  The CDC identified another 72 cases as part of a new outbreak of unknown origin. It is undetermined if the new cases are related to the larger outbreak affecting Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
  • Most of the 7,400 cases under investigation have been reported by Michigan and Ohio.
• By the numbers:  Forty-one states have reported cases since May. There have been 308 hospitalizations, and no deaths have been reported.
• In Pennsylvania:  There have been between 30 and 80 confirmed cases in Pennsylvania.
  • Across the U.S., reporting on infections may vary, as some states handle probable and confirmed cases differently.
• Product recall:  Late last week, Taylor Fresh Foods issued a recall for iceberg lettuce distributed in over two dozen states including Pennsylvania.
  • The recall includes iceberg lettuce sold at retail stores and served in restaurants.
• What to do:  Providers should report cases of patients with cyclosporiasis to their local health departments, federal officials said.
  • The public should be vigilant, avoiding recalled lettuce products and washing items and surfaces thoroughly.
