Survey: Hospitals Want Hybrid Approach to AI

Hybrid intelligence is preferred model to ensure technology augments guidance without replacing human oversight

December 23, 2025

Hospitals prefer artificial intelligence (AI) models that blend technology with their teams’ expertise, according to a new report.

A new survey this month by Carta Healthcare finds that leaders favor AI solutions that augment clinicians’ guidance, which is also known as “hybrid intelligence” model. “The winning strategy is about building a better team where AI provides the speed and scale, while humans provide the judgment and care,” said Brent Dover, CEO of Carta Healthcare.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Top concern:  About 63 percent of respondents reported “misinterpretation of data” as the top risk when AI operates without human oversight.
    • This concern highlights the importance of governance due to the direct implications for patient safety and data reliability, the report notes.
  • What matters most:  About 75 percent of respondents reported clinician involvement in AI design and deployment as “critically important.”
  • No replacement:  About 50 percent of respondents also stated clearly that AI "should augment human decision-making.
    • A smaller share view it as a tool for task replacement.
  • Strong feedback:  So-called “black box” AI that is more autonomous is riskier for higher-stakes clinical settings. The preferred models pair AI tools with human validation.
  • Quotable:  “Healthcare leaders aren’t looking for a magic switch to automate healthcare. They want a force multiplier—AI that respects clinical expertise, demands human validation, and integrates seamlessly into existing workflows,” Dover said.
