Reminder: Deadline for 2023 Medicare, Pennie Insurance Coming Soon

Find coverage that suits your needs

December 06, 2022

If you need to select a health insurance plan for 2023, it’s time to take action.

Medicare open enrollment closes Wednesday. The enrollment period allows beneficiaries to consider any changes they want to make to their health insurance and prescription drug coverage for next year.

For individual Affordable Care Act coverage, the deadline to get health insurance through the state health insurance marketplace, Pennie, is January 15, but consumers need to pick plans by December 15 to ensure coverage starting during the New Year.

As we approach these important deadlines, here’s what you need to know:

  • Early results:  Nearly three weeks into Affordable Care Act enrollment, plan selections were up 17 percent, with 3.4 million people selecting plans nationwide.
    • About four out of five people enrolling could find coverage for $10 or less, officials said.
  • Medicare premiums:  Lower-than-projected spending on the Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm and other Medicare Part B items contributed to next year’s lower Part B premiums.
  • Notable Medicare change:  Next year, Medicare enrollees will pay no more than $35 a month in cost-sharing for covered insulin products. People with Medicare drug coverage will pay nothing out-of-pocket for recommended adult vaccines.
  • What to watch:  Through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, Medicaid beneficiaries could not be disenrolled from coverage during the COVID-19 public health emergency. If the emergency expires during April 2023, about 3.8 million people could become uninsured in the following 14 months, according to a new analysis.

HAP urges everyone who needs health insurance to evaluate their coverage options. When evaluating plan choices, be sure to review your current provider network, your prescription drug needs, and the estimated total costs for coverage.

Medicare beneficiaries can review their coverage options during open enrollment. Additional information—including a plan finder— is available online.
