Measles Cases Continue to Climb across U.S.

November 06, 2025

Measles cases have reached the highest point since 1992, with nearly 1,700 cases reported through mid-week, according to the latest data from the CDC.

Through Tuesday, there have been 44 outbreaks reported this year, and the large majority of cases have been associated with these outbreaks. That’s up from 16 outbreaks the previous year.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • By the numbers:  There have been 1,658 cases reported this year. The highest total since 1992 when 2,126 cases were reported.
  • State perspective:  There have been 16 cases reported this year in Pennsylvania.
    • Texas leads the way with 803 cases reported.
  • Case severity:  About 12 percent of those with measles have been hospitalized, including 22 percent of the 445 people under 5.
    • About 92 percent of cases are from people who are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status.
    • The vaccination rate for kindergarten-age children was 92.7 percent for the 2023–2024 school year. That’s down from 95 percent a few years prior.
  • Issues to watch:  Maintaining the combination vaccine for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) has been a topic of discussion among public health community and the nation’s federal vaccine advisors.
  • Resources for you:  The CDC has provided resources to support community outreach, including a sample community letter, a measles toolkit, and fact sheet for providers caring for patients with the virus.
