HAP's 2026 Workforce Summit

HAP’s Workforce Summit focused on the ways hospital leaders across Pennsylvania are investing in their teams—now and for the future.

The event, in its third year, showed how workforce development is more than one strategy. It layers dozens of approaches to build and support the health care workforce.

“How do we be innovative and creative with the challenges that we are seeing today?” asked Andy Capalong, Geisinger, during a presentation this morning.

Hospital leaders answered that question throughout the day, showcasing novel approaches to develop pathways, advance care, and support the wellness of their teams.

Workforce Summit: 4 Takeaways

  1. Health care careers are accessible. Hospitals are creating the pathways for students to connect with high-demand careers faster than ever before.
  2. New artificial intelligence tools are already making a difference to help project staffing needs and coordinate care.
  3. Hospital teams are thinking differently about hard problems like emergency department boarding and workforce culture.
  4. Developing the pipeline is key, but so is supporting staff wellbeing and mental health.

Supporting a Multigenerational Workforce

Phil Gwoke, CEO of BridgeWorks, delivered the keynote for the event on improving collaboration across generations from Baby Boomers to Gen Z.

Each generation has its unique quirks—both positive and negative—but everyone can collaborate and create a sense of belonging, Gwoke said.

“It’s not about the age,” he said. “It’s about the experiences that shape us.”
