HAP Achievement Awards: Roxborough Memorial Hospital
June 26, 2026
HAP's annual Achievement Awards honor hospitals and health systems for their innovation, creativity, and commitment to patient care. The Achievement Awards showcase and share member hospitals’ and health systems’ successful programs and best practices.
Roxborough Memorial Hospital received the Optimal Operations Award for revitalizing an inpatient rehabilitation program to expand access to post-acute care and strengthen hospital throughput.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The challenge: An underperforming inpatient rehabilitation unit was limiting access to local recovery services, contributing to longer hospital stays and reducing opportunities for patients to return home after hospitalization.
- Addressing the Issue: A review of the unit identified low referral volume, limited physician engagement, staffing gaps, regulatory risk, and lower-than-expected community discharge rates as barriers to stronger performance.
- Taking Action: The hospital implemented a comprehensive turnaround strategy that included dedicated clinical and operational leadership, expanded rehabilitation staffing, physician outreach and education, standardized admission criteria, and enhanced performance monitoring to strengthen the unit and improve patient access.
- Results: Rehabilitation admissions nearly doubled, net revenue increased by more than 50%, more patients returned directly to the community, and the unit exceeded federal rehabilitation compliance requirements.
- Advancing Care: The revitalized unit helped more patients recover in the right setting and return to their communities, building on evidence that “appropriate inpatient rehabilitation facility admissions are associated with a higher potential for direct discharge to the community.”
