CMS Launches Medicare Pilot Program for GLP-1s

July 06, 2026

CMS began covering certain GLP-1 medications through a new Medicare pilot program that launched this month.

Last week, federal officials announced the start of the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The basics:  Eligible beneficiaries with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage can obtain certain GLP-1 medications to lose weight or maintain weight for a $50 copayment. The payment does not count toward individuals' Part D deductible.
  • What’s available:  The products included are Foundayo, Wegovy, and Zepbound. The program does not cover single-dose Zepbound vials or pens
    • Patients need to have a body mass index above 35 or other qualifying conditions in their medical history.
  • Timeline:  The pilot program will run through December 31, 2027.
  • Context:  CMS is collecting data about GLP-1 usage through this Bridge program ahead of the launch of another potential model for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
  • Quotable:  “The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge creates a new pathway for eligible beneficiaries to afford GLP-1 medications,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “If you think a GLP-1 medication may be right for you, talk with your doctor and learn whether you qualify.”

Additional information about the program is available online.
