Achievement Awards Spotlight: Warren General Hospital

HAP's annual Achievement Awards honor hospitals and health systems for their innovation, creativity, and commitment to patient care. The Achievement Awards showcase and share member hospitals’ and health systems’ successful programs and best practices.

This year, Warren General received the Optimal Operations Award for its outstanding project to preserve access to hospital care in a rural community through a strategic economic turnaround.

Here’s what you need to know:

• The challenge:  From 2011 to 2018, this rural community hospital faced significant financial headwinds, prompting leadership to take action to improve operations and economic sustainability.
• Taking action:  Through its new strategic framework, leadership found opportunities to reduce expenses while deploying top line revenue growth tactics. During 2018, the hospital also aligned with a major payor, provider, and medical school established under the vision for the hospital to remain independent.
• Results:  Through these efforts, Warren General made substantial gains toward the vision of independence and world-class care with a focus on economic stability to position the hospital well for long‐term success.
• Next steps:  The hospital continues to capitalize through investment in facilities, equipment, and staff. It also is completing a facility master plan and medical staff development plan.
