Achievement Awards Spotlight: Einstein Medical Center Montgomery—Jefferson

HAP's annual Achievement Awards honor hospitals and health systems for their innovation, creativity, and commitment to patient care. The Achievement Awards showcase and share member hospitals’ and health systems’ successful programs and best practices.

This year, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery—Jefferson Health received the Community Champions Award for its project “Right from the Beginning—A Quality Improvement Initiative to Improve Compliance of Hepatitis B Vaccine at a Birthing Hospital.”

Here’s what you need to know:

• The goal:  The hospital team looked to achieve greater than 90 percent compliance of Hepatitis B vaccination among newborn infants over 12-month period, while improving documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination in patient charts and minimizing any adverse events associated with the administration of the vaccine.
• Taking action:  A new multidisciplinary team implemented several steps to improve vaccination rates, including staff education, and changes to electronic medical records and medication ordering practices upon birth of a newborn.
• Results:  The organization was able to achieve its primary goal of compliance to over 90 percent in the first year of implementation.
• Future opportunities:  The hospital has identified future opportunities to expand its Hepatitis B vaccination efforts, including educating parents prior to delivery and reaching out to primary care practices.
• Quotable:  “Our data shows that when there is active conversation and education regarding Hep B vaccine improvement in compliance can be achieved and maintained protecting the newborn infants from Hepatitis B infection and its complications,” the team noted in its entry.
