A Primer on Medicaid Selection Period in Pennsylvania

July 05, 2022

The plan selection period for Medicaid consumers is underway, and about 500,000 Pennsylvanians will have to select a new plan by August 16.

If you need a plan or want to evaluate your coverage options, here’s what you need to know:

  • What:  The enrollment period for Medicaid (Medical Assistance) is from June 22 through August 16.
  • Important note:  Implementation of new physical health managed care agreements begins September 1. The new agreements mean some consumers will need to choose a new physical health (PH) plan.
  • Auto-enroll:  If you need to choose a new PH plan and do not do so by the deadline, you will be auto-assigned into a new plan. The state is sending letters explaining whether a plan will continue after September 1, all options for health plans in the region, and how to choose or change a plan.
  • Resources:  Medicaid consumers should contact PA Enrollment Services to choose a new physical health plan or to change from one physical health plan to another.
  • Quotable:  “I strongly encourage all Medicaid recipients to review their options, look for plans that include doctors you use and hospitals in your area, and choose a plan that best meets your individual needs before August 16,” DHS Acting Secretary Meg Snead said in a statement.

Additional information about enrollment, including a frequently asked questions guide, is available online.
