A Few More Days for 2024 Health Insurance

January 09, 2024

Pennsylvanians will have a little extra time if they need to pick a health insurance plan via the state’s health insurance marketplace, Pennie.

Today, state leaders announced the extension of open enrollment to January 19 while urging everyone who needs coverage to evaluate their options before the deadline.

“Enrolling in coverage now is the best way to protect your health and your savings in 2024,” said Pennie Executive Director Devon Trolley.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Extension reason:  January 15 is the usual end of open enrollment. This year, the typical end of open enrollment falls on the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, prompting insurance leaders to extend the deadline to January 19.
  • Affordable coverage:  About nine in 10 enrollees qualify for assistance and save over $500 a month on average. No one will pay more than 8.5 percent of their income for coverage.
    • A record 410,000 Pennsylvanians already have enrolled for coverage this year.
    • More than 700,000 Pennsylvanians do not have coverage for this year.
  • Key issue:  The end of continuous enrollment in Medicaid means more people may need coverage via the state marketplace.
  • Need help?:   Reach Pennie’s Customer Service Center at (844) 844-8040. Help is available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Quotable:  “If you are no longer eligible for Medicaid or if you don’t have health coverage at all, open enrollment is the best time to pick a new plan through Pennie to make sure you’re getting the best cost savings and that you and your loved ones are covered in the new year,” said Dr. Val Arkoosh, secretary of the Department of Human Services.
