Sepsis Coding and Claims Denials: How to Get the Reimbursement You’re Losing Today Register Now

Location: Online

Registration Deadline: April 02, 2026

Overview

Sepsis is a leading reason for prolonged hospital stays and hospital readmissions; and recent studies place the cost of a single sepsis readmission between $16,000 and $30,000, with one 2025 review finding a median cost of $20,320 per case. It remains one of the most clinically complex and financially impactful conditions treated in hospitals today, yet many organizations continue to experience missed reimbursement opportunities, clinical validation denials, and compliance risk due to documentation gaps and inconsistent coding practices.

There are both direct and indirect financial consequences from payor downgrades and denials to sepsis cases; hospitals are getting paid less for clinically appropriate care for each patient and as these cases are downgraded, (per use of the Sepsis-3 definition) case mix goes down overtime, which affects all reimbursement. This targeted webinar with an industry expert is designed specifically to connect the dots between the clinical documentation and financial reimbursement for CFOs, revenue cycle leaders, CMOs, CNOs, coding professionals, CDI teams, and clinical staff who play a critical role in accurate sepsis capture.

Participants will gain practical, actionable strategies to strengthen documentation integrity, support compliant coding, and improve reimbursement outcomes—without increasing audit exposure.

Learning Objectives

In this session, attendees will learn:

  • The difference between definitions: Sepsis-2 vs. Sepsis-3
  • How payors use definitions to drive denials
  • Lost reimbursement many hospitals could be realizing
  • Countermeasures hospitals should take to avoid sepsis claim denials and increase reimbursement
