Building Safer Systems for Maternal Care in Collaboration with ED and EMS Clinicians Register Now

Location: Online

Registration Deadline: October 10, 2025

Overview

Emergency Departments (ED) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are critical entry points for pregnant and postpartum individuals experiencing life-threatening complications. With over two million ED visits each year by women of reproductive age in the U.S., and postpartum complications frequently presenting outside traditional maternity care settings, ED and EMS teams are essential partners in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality.

Over 50% of pregnancy-associated deaths occur in the postpartum period, and many are preventable. This webinar will explore how EDs and EMS can strengthen maternal safety through collaboration with obstetric teams, standardized protocols, and maternal-specific training. The session will also address the CMS Obstetric Conditions of Participation that require hospitals to have systems in place for obstetric emergency care, reinforcing the urgency for emergency readiness.

Learning Objectives

  1. Strengthen Emergency Readiness for Maternal Health
Understand the role of EDs and EMS in recognizing and managing obstetric complications, including postpartum conditions, and how CMS Obstetric Conditions of Participation support standardized, high-quality maternal emergency care.
  2. Enhance Collaboration Between ED, EMS, and Obstetric Teams
Explore models of effective communication, coordination, and use of technology that improve maternal outcomes, including case studies and practical tools for integrated care.
  3. Address Systemic Challenges and Disparities in Maternal Emergency Care
Identify barriers to timely and equitable maternal care in emergency settings—including staffing, training, and resource limitations—and examine strategies to reduce disparities and improve access to safe, responsive care for all patients.
