Finding Financial Stability in Health Care

It’s no secret that 2023 is anticipated to be a difficult year financially for health care providers. Staffing shortages, skyrocketing labor costs, inflation, rising interest rates, unpredictable volume and the dissipation of CARES Act funding are pressuring both revenue and expenses. And many hospitals are facing potential financial covenant violations as a result. During this session, we’ll share insights on developing a path toward financial sustainability and discuss strategies around workforce, volume, supplies and purchased services, physician enterprise, and managing covenant breaches.

Part I: Adapting Change, Building Community, and Analyzing Generational Differences within your Hospital

Health care workforce shortages across Pennsylvania and the nation were approaching a crisis even before the pandemic. An aging population means more health care professionals are retiring just as demand for care is increasing and there is concern that the talent pipeline will quickly dry up without some much-needed change. During this session, you will learn how to embrace change, build community within your hospital, and acknowledge generational differences to rebuild the workforce pipeline so Pennsylvania’s health care sector can remain a national innovator, economic driver, and quality employer for hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians. 

Part II: Developing and Solving the Workforce Pipeline

High-quality care can’t happen without talented teams of health care professionals. To meet Pennsylvanians’ health care needs now and into the future, we must make a persistent and sustained effort to grow and support the health care workforce. We must work together to strategically address each intercept point along the talent pipeline: education and training, recruitment, retention, and succession planning. During this interactive session we will use design thinking, hear perspectives from health care leaders, and work together to solve for our most challenging issue: the workforce talent pipeline.

Part III: Leading with Compassion
