Overview

This presentation will provide information regarding the use of methadone maintenance as an effective treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Methadone maintenance is a highly regulated treatment modality provided by licensed and accredited facilities. This presentation will discuss the regulations surrounding the use of methadone maintenance, barriers to accessing treatment, stigma and discrimination experienced by those utilizing it as part of their recovery, and discuss next steps for primary care providers working with patients with OUD.

Objectives

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss why methadone maintenance is an effective treatment option for OUD
  • Describe the regulations surrounding methadone maintenance treatment
  • Discuss how stigma and discrimination related to OUD and methadone can negatively impact treatment outcomes
  • Identify barriers to coordinating care between substance abuse and primary care providers
