Treating Substance Use Disorders During the COVID-19 Pandemic—focus on Medication for Addiction Treatment

Location: Online

Registration Deadline: May 11, 2020

Overview

Behavioral health providers are concerned about the increased risk of overdose related to the pandemic, but there are also issues related to having a substance use disorder (SUD) that increase the risk of developing severe COVID-19. These issues will be explored, along with significant regulatory changes related to COVID-19. We will present regulatory changes and guidance from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Office of Civil Rights surrounding prescribing medications for addiction treatment and expanding access to telehealth.

Topics Emphasized

  • People with SUD are at increased risk of developing severe COVID 19
  • People with SUD are at increased risk of OD related to COVID 19
  • Changes in Telehealth Regulations related to COVID 19 and MAT
    • SAMHSA changes for OTP/NTPs
    • DEA Requirements regarding Telehealth
    • Office of Civil Rights
    • 42 CFR changes
  • Home Inductions of Buprenorphine

Objectives

  • Identify at least three risk factors, exacerbated by and unique to the COVID-19 emergency, that are associated with relapse and overdose
  • Discuss recent regulatory changes, in light of COVID-19, for the delivery of MAT: Changes from SAMHSA, DEA, Office of Civil Rights,  42 CFR
  • Discuss home induction and monitoring during COVID-19
