COVID-19 Legal Update—Navigating EMTALA and Other Compliance Challenges

Location: Online

Registration Deadline: April 14, 2020

Overview

With the spread of COVID-19 across the United States, emergency departments (EDs) regardless of hospital size or location are being flooded with patients seeking emergency care. As patients with coronavirus-like symptoms present at the ED for testing and treatment, hospitals must ensure compliance with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).

On March 30, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services revised its EMTALA guidance in response to ongoing concerns related to COVID-19.  This revised guidance is comprehensive and will be reviewed during this webinar.

Key Discussion Points Include:

  • Obligations and expectations to screen and stabilize or transfer individuals
  • Recommended screening factors
  • Use of alternate screening sites (including the establishment of drive-through testing sites)
  • Enforcement standards
  • Concerns related to lack of PPE and the use of telehealth
  • Considerations for staff who are reassigned during a crisis

This webinar is complimentary to HAP members.
