2020 Leadership Summit

Location: Hilton Harrisburg 1 N 2nd Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101

Registration Deadline: May 13, 2020

HAP’s 2020 Leadership Summit, scheduled for May 20 and 21, has been canceled due to the impact of COVID-19. Given the unknown duration of the impact of COVID-19 across the Commonwealth, we do not currently plan to reschedule this meeting in 2020. HAP’s 2021 Leadership Summit is set for May 10-11, 2021.

The summit provides hospital leaders with opportunities for quality networking with health care policymakers, elected officials, and peers. The sessions blend coverage of trend updates with education and best practices, addressing the issues that matter most to hospitals. The session begins Wednesday, May 20, with preconference sessions, followed by a networking reception and dinner speaker, Michael Smerconish. The event will end on Thursday, May 21, with an awards lunch and motivational speaker Ronan Tynan. Join colleagues, legislators and their staff, and administration officials at HAP's premier event for hospital and health system leaders.

The Opioid Dilemma: What Becoming a Patient Taught Me About the Ethics of Opioid Prescribing
Travis Rieder, PhD, Director of the Master of Bioethics Program and  Research Scholar, Johns Hopkins University

The opioid crisis exists against a backdrop of real, debilitating pain—and anyone can fall victim to this epidemic. The danger of opioids is well known but the problem is bigger than that. Clinicians risk both undertreating pain due to fear of addiction and overprescribing opioids because they want to treat pain. Opening speaker Travis Rieder calls this the “Opioid Dilemma.” Rieder will share his own gripping personal account of dependence, a groundbreaking exploration of the intractable causes of America’s opioid problem, and where progress can be made.

Strategic Cybersecurity and Risk Issues for Leaders
John Riggi, Senior Advisory for Cybersecurity & Risk, American Hospital Association

Cybersecurity is on the top of every health leader’s mind. Criminal and cyber adversaries are adopting more sophisticated tactics, which can shut down a hospital’s network and its backup data. This can directly impact public health and safety by forcing hospitals to cancel medical procedures, divert ambulances, and make it harder to restore care delivery operations. John Riggi, a 30-year decorated veteran of the FBI will teach you the 12 considerations designed to help hospital leaders to identify cybercrimes and defend systems and networks against the most significant threats impacting safety and care delivery.
