HAP, Pennsylvania Hospitals Assisting with Harvey Response
August 29, 2017
Tom Grace, vice president, emergency preparedness for The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), has been deployed to support Texas medical operations as a member of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) team from Pennsylvania. Grace serves as a NMDS Federal Disaster Team Commander.
The NDMS is a federally coordinated health care response system in partnership with the Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Defense, and Veterans Affairs. The purpose of the NDMS is to support state and local authorities following disasters and emergencies by supplementing health and medical systems and response capabilities.
Grace is part of a 35-person team that received orders on August 28 and is expected to support Texas medical operations until approximately September 10.
Pennsylvania hospitals are joining the effort to provide volunteer medical staff, resources, and financial support to assist in the disaster response. Additionally, HAP is working with the American Hospital Association and the Texas Hospital Association to promote opportunities for members of the hospital community to contribute to a relief fund to assist displaced hospital employees.
