HAP Statement on Derek Chauvin Trial Verdict

April 21, 2021

Andy Carter, president and CEO of The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), today released the following statement regarding the guilty verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin:

The verdict in yesterday’s trial represents a moment of accountability in a country that has, for too long, been dominated by systemic racism. Accountability for one act of horrific violence, however, is not justice. We must work at all levels to create fundamental change—change that goes beyond pledges and speaks to the work that will create a more equitable and fair system for those who have suffered and been marginalized.

During the last year, the hospital community has accelerated our efforts to address centuries of systemic inequality and structural racism in health care. HAP and its members—through internal and external programs—continue to do the critical work of confronting our own biases, and assessing and addressing clinical inequalities that can contribute to racial differences in health outcomes. We have a long road ahead, but we remain committed to our mission of rebuilding our health care system in a way that puts an end to disparities and creates a healthier Pennsylvania for all
