On the CUSP: Stop BSI
An ICU Infection Reduction and Safety Effort
Last Updated: 2/8/2010

Overview:

Pennsylvania has been selected as one of ten states to participate in a two-year project funded through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This national initiative to reduce central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) in ICUs represents a partnership established between the American Hospital Association’s Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET) , the Johns Hopkins University Quality & Safety Research Group (JHU) , and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association’s Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality .

AHRQ seeks to replicate nationally the 2003 success of the Michigan Keystone CLABSI Reduction in ICU project in which Dr. Peter Pronovost from the JHU worked in collaboration with more than 108 Michigan ICUs to reduce the incidence of CLABSI by focusing on the implementation of evidence-based interventions aimed at improving team work and communication between clinicians; and by enhancing the culture of safety and improving staff satisfaction.

Each participating ICU team will:

  • Learn how to apply the CUSP and CLABSI reduction tools.
  • Receive tools for measuring CLABSI and safety culture in ICUs.
  • Receive ongoing support through monthly calls.
  • Have access to expert faculty for conference calls and face-to-face meetings.
  • Receive a detailed ICU Operations Manual.

Participating Member Organizations:

  • Altoona Regional Health System
  • Bradford Regional Medical Center
  • Bryn Mawr Hospital
  • Crozer-Chester Medical Center
  • Geisinger Health System
  • Holy Spirit Hospital
