HAP recently conducted a survey to update its findings about how the national economic recession is impacting Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems. The findings reflect that there has been no improvement in the economic conditions facing hospitals and in some areas, indicate that the situation has worsened. There also has been little or no change to the numbers of hospitals reporting declining investment income and little or no improvement for hospitals needing access to capital to improve their physical plants and technology.
HAP shared the updated findings of the survey with the media during early March. In addition, HAP will be sharing this information with public policymakers at the state and federal level as they develop state and federal budgets, stressing that the latest survey findings demonstrate the importance of sustaining federal and state investments in hospitals—particularly through the Medicaid and Medicare programs that provide health care coverage for the state’s elderly and most vulnerable citizens.
