HAP Memo #10-22
Thursday, February 11, 2010

TO:
Chief Executive Officers of Pennsylvania Hospitals and Health Systems and AHA Survey Coordinators of Pennsylvania Hospitals and Health Systems
FROM:
Carolyn F. Scanlan - President and Chief Executive Officer
SUBJECT:
AHA Annual Survey for Fiscal Year 2009

Issue: The American Hospital Association (AHA) annual hospital survey now is available online for fiscal year 2009 data collection. All Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems are encouraged to complete the AHA Annual Survey.

Background: The AHA Annual Survey has been the primary data source for the AHA’s national authoritative database on hospitals and health systems. This vital national data collection effort results in a comprehensive database used throughout the country for tracking changes in hospitals and health systems and for influencing public policy.

Again this year, HAP has partnered with AHA in collecting the annual survey data from all hospitals and health systems in Pennsylvania. This data is used to support HAP’s federal advocacy agenda. Like last year, we will be using a secure Internet website as our primary means of collecting the AHA Annual Survey data. The AHA Annual Survey is now available online for Pennsylvania hospitals for fiscal year 2009 data submission.

The online AHA Annual Survey has been enhanced to enable easier data entry, validation, and report generation. Included with this HAP memo is a hospital-specific online survey login identification sheet, which includes login IDs and passwords for AHA Annual Survey coordinators. HAP will be available to answer questions regarding the survey and the online system, and to assist with data entry and online reporting.

The online AHA survey offers many benefits for hospitals and health systems:

  • Receive real-time reports, enabling you to confirm the accuracy of your entry before submission and provide you with valuable benchmarks and analysis tools.
  • Give access to the online survey to multiple users within your hospital.
  • Provide historical reference data as well as instant data verification as information is entered.

HAP Action: HAP will concentrate on assisting all hospitals and health systems with completion of the AHA survey. It is vital that all hospitals and health systems complete the AHA survey, since it provides both HAP and AHA with current information to advocate on economic stimulus, as well as a variety of reimbursement (including Medicare and Medicaid) and other issues important to assuring the continued viability of hospitals and health systems.

To assist your hospital in completing the AHA survey, enclosed are the following materials:

  • An Online Survey Login Identification Sheet with your hospital’s login ID and password.
  • A letter from Peter Kralovec, senior director of the Health Care Data Center at the AHA.
  • A “Walk-through the 2009 AHA Annual Survey Online” document, which will assist you in completing the survey.

For hospitals with survey coordinators other than the CEO, the survey coordinator also is receiving this memo and enclosures directly from HAP.

Hospital Action: Survey coordinators and CEO designees should review the enclosed materials and complete the online survey by March 12, 2010. Hospitals completing the survey online do not need to return a paper copy to HAP. Hospitals that prefer to complete a paper copy of the survey should contact Elaine Foster at (717) 561-5237 to get a hard copy, and return the completed survey to:
