Health Promotion Advocacy

Home Safety

The PAHA Health Promotion project selected for 2005-2006 is Home Safety. There are many possibilities that come under this heading. Although most of these topics have been stressed at various times over the years, we need to reinforce Home Safety on a daily basis. Some points to emphasize include fire prevention, proper gun storage, the prevention of falls, safe use of cleaning materials, kitchen and bathroom safety, poison prevention, and the use of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to name a few. This list of ways to promote safety includes special precautions is there is a young child or elderly person in the home.

There are also many safety issues that pertain to seasonal activities. Winter may include issues with fireplaces, candles, icy walks, etc, while summer reminds us to use proper methods of preserving picnic foods, backyard swimming pool safety, and the hazards of fireworks.

It is the responsibility of everyone to look around your home carefully and be alert to any possible dangers. Strive to make Home Safety a top priority.

For more information on PAHA’s health promotion projects, contact PAHA Health Promotion Chair, Cherie Lebard by phone at 717-749-7736.

Legislative Advocacy

PAHA’s legislative network consists of the PAHA Legislative Chairman, the six region legislative chairmen and the auxiliary legislative chairmen. Information is shared within this network and communicated to auxilians across the state.

The PAHA Legislative Chairman and the six region legislative chairmen receive legislative information directly from the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) from HAP Update and from this website. From this information, decisions are made concerning specific legislation and what grassroots advocacy action auxilians should take. Auxilians then coordinate any grassroots advocacy efforts with the appropriate individuals within their hospital or health system.

For more information on PAHA’s Legislative Network, its grassroots advocacy efforts or how to support PAHA’s legislative efforts, contact Fran Hartman by phone at 717-248-2385.
