11 new Medicare ACOs in Pennsylvania in 2018

January 12, 2018

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the 2018 list of accountable care organizations (ACOs) approved for the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP). Among the 561 approved ACOs, 39 provide care to Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania—a jump of 11 ACOs, up fom 29 during 2017.

Of the 39 ACOs serving Medicare beneficiaries in PA, 14 are headquartered in the state.

The new MSSP ACOs in Pennsylvania are:

  • Healthcare Quality Partners LLC
  • ACO West Virginia
  • Bridges Health Partners Accountable Care Organization
  • CHSPSC ACO 13, LLC
  • St. Luke's Medicare ACO
  • Physician Partners of Western PA LLC
  • Steward National Care Network, Inc.
  • Heritage Valley Healthcare Network ACO, LLC
  • Orange Accountable Care Organization LLC
  • Einstein Care Partners, LLC
  • Aledade Accountable Care 22, LLC

The MSSP is a CMS program designed to lower health care costs, improve the beneficiary experience and access to care, and improve health. 2018 is the sixth year of the MSSP program.

In the MSSP model, groups of physicians join to form an ACO. Those clinicians are then responsible for all the Medicare Part A and B healthcare expenditures provided to their Medicare patients during the year.

If they are successful in producing significant savings compared to baseline expectations, they may qualify to share in a portion of those savings with CMS. The actual amount depends on the selected risk arrangement and performance toward a designated set of quality measures.
