Workplace violence can be any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. It ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. It can affect and involve employees, patients, families, clients, and visitors. Workplace violence comes at a high cost; however, it can be prevented.

No one-size-fits-all policy can protect every facility from workplace violence. What’s important is that you determine what works for your organization and work to implement and maintain it. During this workshop, expert faculty will provide resources to help you build and implement a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program at your health care facility.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the issue of workplace violence, its impact on clinicians and the role of clinical leaders in mitigating violence
  • Identify best practices in violence prevention programming including preparedness drills, de-escalation training and other initiatives that meet the unique needs of community
  • Understand how a hospital-based violence prevention model can be applied at your hospital
  • Describe effective strategies to diffuse violence in the workplace
  • Explore strategies to incorporate security personnel into the care team
